The cotton count

Band yarns are named by the cotton count: 840 yards per pound per count, divided by the plies. So 3/2 cotton = 840 × 3 ÷ 2 = 1,260 yards per pound; 8/4 = 1,680; 10/2 = 4,200. The count's first number = the spin's fineness, the second = how many plies are twisted together, a 10/2 thread = finer than 3/2 but with company.

Wraps per inch (wpi)

The sett's starting point. The app anchors a real measurement, 3/2 cotton wraps about 24 per inch (12 in half an inch), and scales by the square root of yards per pound, "since thickness goes with the square root of weight per length". Everything past that anchor = an estimate the person replaces with their own wpi test.

8/4 cotton1,680~28
5/2 cotton2,100~31
8/2 cotton3,360~39
10/2 cotton4,200~44

The packing defaults

Warp-faced bands pack about 1.25 ends per wrap; picks run about half the wraps. Tablet's exception: each card twines four threads into one cord about two threads wide, so the ends and the picks both count about wpi ÷ 2.

Everything after the 24-wpi anchor = an estimate. tie a 1-inch test strip, count your wraps, replace the numbers, the app lets you enter the measured ones.
